Become a Dancer
So, you are serious about dancing? Whether you already join(ed) some classes or you are an absolute beginner, these tips will come in handy!
Dancing provides a lot of mental and physical benefits; it will give you better self-confidence, improve your posture, and enable you to meet new friends. But a lot of people don’t know how to get started dancing and they hesitate when they do not have a previous experience in dancing before. However, getting started in dancing is easier than anyone might think.
The first thing you should have is a desire and passion for dancing. This is important for you to be motivated in the long run and sustain this activity. It is important for you to know the kind of dancing that will suit you best, there are a variety of ballroom dances you can choose from. If you’re not sure what kind of dancing style is suitable for you, a lot of studios offer a program where you can try all their dances for one month so experience different kinds of dancing.
You also need to look at the practical considerations such as the dance class you want to join and the dance studio you will enroll in. Of course, if you don’t have any previous experience in dancing then it is recommended for you to enroll in the intermediate level first then proceed to more advanced classes later on. You might also want to enroll in a dance studio that has many facilities and expansive dance floors so you will be able to dance better. Some studios also feature a mirrored wall so that students can see their performance themselves on the mirror.
Then you also need to know the appropriate attire for the dance class. Usually, wearing anything that is comfortable and neat is enough. If your teachers does not have a dress code, just pay attention to what the other students and the teacher are wearing and choose something simular.
Another aspect you need to look into when you are starting in dancing is your dance instructor. While it is recommended for you to choose a professional to teach you how to dance, it is also important for you to be comfortable with the dance instructor (I am very lucky with Dorothée). This will make the learning process easier for you and you will be a great dancer in no time.
As you can see, starting in dance is actually quite simple, you just need to take the first step and everything else will follow. You should remember that every dancer has their own pace so don’t get discouraged if another person seems to learn faster than you. On the other hand, you should also try to encourage dancers who learn at a slower pace than you.
